I’ve photographed weddings at Islington Town Hall a few times now, and every time I return, I’m reminded of just how much I love photographing weddings in this part of London.

There is something about Islington that feels completely alive. You step outside the town hall and you are immediately surrounded by the energy of the city: red buses passing by, people walking to work, couples heading somewhere for lunch, cyclists, cars, conversations and all the little things that make London feel like London.

And I love photographing a wedding in the middle of all of that.

As a London wedding photographer, my approach is documentary and unobtrusive. I don’t want your wedding photographs to feel disconnected from the place where your day actually happened. I want to capture the atmosphere around you as well as the people you love.

That’s one of the things I particularly enjoy about an Islington Town Hall wedding. You can have the elegance and history of the town hall as your backdrop, but as soon as you walk outside, you are right in the middle of everyday London.

A wedding in the heart of London

Islington Town Hall is a beautiful setting for a London wedding. There is a sense of occasion as soon as you arrive, but it doesn’t feel isolated from the city around it.

For me, this is part of what makes photographing a wedding here so interesting.

I love the photographs that happen when a wedding day meets everyday life.

A bride and groom walking outside while a red London bus passes behind them. Guests standing on the pavement chatting after the ceremony. Someone rushing past without even noticing that a wedding is taking place. Friends laughing together as they walk down the street.

These are the photographs that can make a wedding gallery feel like a genuine story of the day rather than simply a collection of beautiful portraits. I don’t want to stop the world around you. I’d much rather photograph you as you are, with London continuing to move around you.

There is something particularly lovely about seeing people going about their own lives while, just a few metres away, two people have just got married.

It puts the wedding into context.

For a moment, your day is the most important thing in the world to you and your family — but London carries on around you. Buses continue to pass, people continue walking down the street, and the city continues doing what it always does.

Weddings in London usually follow the same recipe: A ceremony at a London Town Hall followed by a reception at a pub.

This is exactly what Amy and Rob did in this occasion. They got married at Islington Town Hall before jumping on a classic London red bus with their friends and family and heading across North London to The Londesborough to continue their celebrations.

My documentary approach to Islington Town Hall weddings

My approach to wedding photography is documentary. I’m not interested in turning your wedding day into a long series of posed photographs.

Of course, I will take some portraits of you together, and I’ll make sure you have beautiful photographs with the people who are important to you. But I want those photographs to feel natural and connected to the day.

I’d much rather give you a little direction and then allow something genuine to happen than spend a long time arranging you into a pose.

At Islington Town Hall, there are so many opportunities to do this.

The building itself provides beautiful architectural backdrops, while the streets outside give you something completely different. The combination means that we can create photographs that feel elegant and timeless alongside photographs that are spontaneous, energetic and unmistakably London.

The stairs at Islington Town Hall

One of my favourite places inside Islington Town Hall is the staircase.

It is such a simple thing, but it creates a beautiful opportunity for natural portraits.

The stairs allow us to step away from the main flow of the wedding for a moment. Rather than setting up a formal portrait session, we can simply take a little time there and make use of the venue architecture, light and space.

I particularly like photographs where you are not looking directly at the camera.

You might be walking up or down the stairs together, looking at each other, talking or simply pausing for a moment. I also have a few tips to generate natural reactions. These photographs can feel much more like a memory of the day than a traditional wedding portrait.

It is one of those places where I can give you a little direction and then allow the moment to unfold naturally.

The beautiful hall upstairs

Another favourite spot of mine at Islington Town Hall is the hall upstairs.

It has that wonderful classic London civic architecture that works beautifully for couple portraits.

I particularly love making use of the big windows. Some are also downstairs and offer a good, clean backdrop.

Depending on the light and where you are standing, we can create photographs with a wonderful silhouette effect too

Silhouettes are something I love because they can be incredibly simple in terms of vision.

You don’t necessarily need to see every detail of a face or dress for a photograph to communicate something. Sometimes the shape of two people standing close together and their expression still caught in the silhouette are enough.

And of course, I don’t want to keep you there for ages. A few minutes are enough and not too demanding so that you can easily do it and go back to enjoy your day.

The Council Chamber – a unique ceremony room

The main ceremony room at Islington Town Hall is the Council Chamber, and it is one of the features that makes the venue particularly distinctive.

Right before entering the Council Chamber, there is a wide area where the guests can wait and mingle while the couple does their formalities with the registrar. It’s a good opportunity for me to capture some candid shots of family and friends while they are waiting to witness the big event.

When you enter the room, the red seats immediately catch your eye, creating a beautiful contrast with the warm tones of the wood that structures the space.

There is something that reminds me of a theatre. The arrangement of the seats, the architecture and the scale of the space, which looks like an amphitheatre, as it features a curved, horseshoe-shaped tiered seating layout. This makes a wonderful backdrop for a wedding ceremony. The red seats add a punchy colour and character to the photographs. It doesn’t feel like a generic wedding room in a registry office. It has its own identity, the one of Islington Town Hall!

That is something I always look for when I photograph weddings. I want the photographs to remind you not only of what happened, but also of where you were.

Years from now, I want you to look at your wedding photographs and immediately remember Islington Town Hall — the red seats, the architecture, the people sitting around you and the feeling of getting married in the middle of London.

Taking your wedding photographs outside

Once the ceremony is over, one of my favourite things to do is step outside with you and your guests.

The streets around the town hall allow me to photograph the wedding against the everyday backdrop of London. And I love allowing the city to become part of the photographs.

A red bus passing behind you can suddenly become part of the composition. Someone walking past can add movement to the photograph. A taxi, a cyclist or a group of people crossing the road can all contribute to the atmosphere.

I’m not looking for everything to be perfectly controlled. Quite the opposite. Some of my favourite photographs are the ones where something unexpected happens.

Perhaps somebody notices you and smiles. Perhaps a bus passes at exactly the right moment. Perhaps your friends are laughing together on the pavement while you are still coming out of the town hall. These are the little things that make a wedding photograph feel alive.

Natural couple portraits in London

If you would like some photographs of just the two of you, I’ll keep this relaxed too.

I don’t want to disappear for an hour and leave you away from your guests. A wedding day goes incredibly quickly, and I think you should spend most of it with the people who have come to celebrate with you.

Instead, we can take a short amount of time to create some portraits around Islington Town Hall and make use of the building and surrounding streets.

Sometimes the best portrait is simply you walking together.

Sometimes it is standing outside the town hall while London moves around you.

And sometimes it is one of those quieter moments inside the building, on the staircase or upstairs by the windows.

The important thing for me is that the photographs still feel like you.

Photographing the rest of the wedding day

Of course, an Islington Town Hall wedding isn’t just about the ceremony.

For me, the rest of the day is where the documentary side of wedding photography really comes alive.

The hugs immediately after the ceremony.

Parents seeing their children as newlyweds.

Friends congratulating you outside.

People laughing together.

The slightly chaotic group photographs.

The champagne.

The conversations that happen when nobody thinks they are being photographed.

The little details you spent months choosing.

And all the moments that you probably won’t even notice on the day because you are too busy enjoying yourselves.

My job is to notice those things.

I’m constantly looking around, watching what is happening rather than trying to make things happen.

That is what I love about documentary wedding photography.

You get to be present at your wedding while I quietly record the story unfolding around you.

Why I love photographing weddings at Islington Town Hall

Having photographed at Islington Town Hall several times, I feel like I know the building well enough to understand where I want to look for photographs, but I never want to photograph two weddings in the same way.

Every couple brings something different.

The people are different. The weather is different. The light changes. The energy of the day changes.

And then there is London itself.

That is probably my favourite thing about photographing weddings here.

I love the city.

I love the red buses and the black cabs. I love people walking down the street, completely absorbed in their own lives. I love the architecture, the noise, the movement and the little unexpected moments that happen everywhere.

And when you put a wedding into that environment, something really special happens.

You have this beautiful, important moment in two people’s lives happening right in the middle of a city that simply keeps moving.

That is a story I love photographing.
