I’ve photographed a few weddings now at Morden Park House, and it’s a venue I have a real soft spot for. Unlike some of the town halls I photograph in the middle of the city, Morden Park House feels like a little escape. You’re still in London, but the moment you arrive, surrounded by the huge park that wraps around the building, it feels calmer, greener, and a world away from traffic and noise.

That contrast is part of what makes it such a lovely place to document a wedding.

As a London wedding photographer, my approach is documentary and unobtrusive. I’m not interested in stopping you every few minutes to pose for the camera. I’d much rather let your day unfold naturally around you, and simply be there to notice it. At Morden Park House, with all that space and greenery to work with, there’s so much room for exactly that kind of photography.

A fresh start in a new city

This particular wedding was Nikki and Nick’s, and their story had a lovely backdrop of its own. The two of them had recently moved from the US to live in the UK, and on top of settling into a new country, Nikki was pregnant. There’s something really special about photographing a couple at a moment like that: a wedding, a new home, a new country and a baby on the way, all arriving at once. You could feel that sense of a new chapter beginning right through the day.

I loved the ceremony room itself, and even more than that, I loved the way you leave it. The doors open out through a doorway framed with wisteria, and stepping through that after the ceremony, out into the light and the greenery beyond, is such a beautiful, natural moment to photograph. No direction needed. Just two people walking out as husband and wife, straight into the garden.

The park right on the doorstep

One of the things I love most about Morden Park House is that you don’t have to go anywhere for beautiful portraits. There’s an enormous park right next to the building, and we made good use of it straight after the ceremony.

Rather than rushing everyone off to a separate location, we simply stepped out into the park while the light and the energy of the day were still fresh. Big skies, proper green space, and none of the usual hunting around for a decent backdrop. Couples are often surprised at how much variety there is right there on the doorstep, from open lawns to tree-lined paths, and it meant we could keep things relaxed rather than turning portraits into a big production.

When the light doesn’t cooperate

Not every part of the day goes exactly to plan when it comes to light, and that’s fine, because it’s usually the moment for a bit of creative problem-solving rather than a straightforward shot. We also tried a portrait indoors, but the light in that spot was quite poor for a natural, well-exposed image.

Rather than fighting it, I leaned into it. We turned it into a silhouette instead, using the shape of Nikki and Nick together against the light rather than trying to force a conventional portrait out of a room that didn’t have the light for it. I love silhouettes for exactly this reason: you don’t need to see every detail to feel the emotion of a moment. Sometimes the outline says enough.

Everything else, exactly as it happened

Outside of that one silhouette, the rest of the day was pure candid documentary photography, which is really where my style lives. I wasn’t looking to create moments; I was looking to notice them.

The hugs after the ceremony. Guests catching up with people they hadn’t seen in years. Nikki laughing with her bridesmaids. Nick’s face the moment he saw her. The little in-between moments nobody remembers happening, but that end up being some of the most-loved photographs in the gallery once the day is over.

That’s the part of wedding photography I love most: staying alert, staying quiet, and letting the day tell its own story rather than directing it. You get to actually be present at your own wedding, while I quietly keep track of everything happening around you.

Why I love photographing weddings at Morden Park House

Every wedding I photograph here feels different, because every couple brings something different to it, but there are a few things about Morden Park House itself that I keep coming back to.

I love that it doesn’t feel like a typical London ceremony venue. The park gives you space to breathe, room to spread out, and a genuinely lovely, green setting that photographs beautifully in almost any weather. I love that wisteria doorway, and the way it turns the simple act of leaving the ceremony room into a proper photograph in its own right. And I love that, when the light lets me down in one corner of the building, there’s always another spot, or another idea, close by.

Nikki and Nick’s day was a lovely reminder of that: a new country, a new chapter, and a wedding photographed exactly as it happened, wisteria, silhouettes and all.
